LUKE 5:31–32 “Jesus answered them, ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick; I have come to call not the righteous, but sinners to repentance’”.
WHAT IS THIS VERSE ABOUT? The Pharisees and scribes reproached Jesus for eating and communicating with tax collectors and sinners. To them, this seemed wrong. But Christ explained: His mission is to save those who recognize their spiritual illness, who understand that without God they are perishing. Just as a doctor is needed not by the healthy, but by the sick, so Jesus came to those who need mercy and forgiveness. WHAT DOES GOD WANT TO SAY THROUGH THIS VERSE? 1. Jesus is a spiritual physician. He heals not just the body, but the heart, freeing it from sin and inner emptiness. 2. The main condition is to admit one's illness. Only those who understand they are sinners are ready to accept and receive healing. 3. Christ rejects no one. He came not to the “perfect”, but to the fallen, to uplift them and give them new life. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? People often think that God only seeks the “good”, the “pure”, and the “right”. But this verse shatters this idea. Christ seeks exactly those who are broken, who have made mistakes, who are lost. This gives hope to everyone – there is no depth of failure from which Jesus cannot lift. CONCLUSION Christ is a spiritual physician. But His healing is only possible for those willing to admit their spiritual need. A proud and self-righteous person will not see the need for repentance. But those who honestly admit and say, “Lord, I am sick with sin, forgive me and have mercy on me”, will receive forgiveness and mercy. FINAL THOUGHT God does not expect perfection - He expects humility. HOW TO USE IT TODAY • Stop pretending to be “spiritually healthy” and honestly admit your weaknesses before God. • Do not judge others for their sins, but remember that Jesus suffered for them too. • Turn to God every day for renewal and healing of your heart. PRAYER Lord Jesus, thank You for coming not to the “perfect”, but to those like me. You are the physician of my soul. Forgive my sins, both conscious and unconscious. Help me humbly come to You every day and trust Your love, which uplifts, forgives, changes the heart, and gives new life. Amen.
