PSALM 138:8–10
“If I go up to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in the depths, You are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there Your hand will guide me, Your right hand will hold me fast”.
WHAT IS THIS VERSE ABOUT?
The psalmist David reflects on God's presence and comes to a surprising conclusion: there is no place where God is absent.
Heaven and hell, the east (“wings of the dawn”) and the west (“the far side of the sea”) — these are images of the most distant and opposite places a person of that time could imagine.
The psalmist David says: wherever I go, You are already there.
These are not words about God's control, from which it is impossible to hide. These are words about God's closeness, from which it is impossible to be separated.
WHAT DOES GOD WANT TO SAY THROUGH THIS VERSE?
God never leaves His children alone. Sometimes a person feels: “God is far away”, “God has forgotten me”, “I am left alone with my pain”. But God's presence does not depend on our feelings. Even if a person goes through the darkest periods of life, God remains close. Moreover, David says, “Your hand will guide me”. God is not just there as an observer. He guides, supports, and keeps us on our path.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Because many fears are born of the feeling of loneliness. When a person thinks they are alone, any problem begins to seem bigger than it is. But if God is near, then even on a difficult path, the person ceases to feel alone.
This psalm does not promise the absence of difficulties. It promises God's presence in the midst of difficulties.
HOW TO USE IT TODAY
1. If you are going through a difficult time, remind yourself: God is near even when you do not feel Him.
2. When fear of the future arises, remember that God's hand is already there where you are going.
3. If there is someone nearby who feels lonely, become a reflection of God's care and support for them.
CONCLUSION
There is no place where one can escape God's love, care, and presence.
Wherever a person may be, God is able to find them, support them, and guide them further on.
FINAL THOUGHT
Sometimes it seems to us that we are searching for God.
But much more often, it turns out that God has been there all along, holding our hand even when we did not notice that.
PRAYER
Lord, thank You for there is no place where You might abandon me. When I feel alone, remind me of Your presence. When I fear to face the future, help me trust in Your hand, which is already guiding me forward. Support me when I weaken, and help me never forget that You are near. Amen.
