PHILIPPIANS 3:8
“What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ”.
WHAT IS THIS VERSE ABOUT?
The Apostle Paul does not speak as a man “with nothing”. On the contrary, he had everything that was valued by the society. He was educated, respected, successful in his system, with a position and authority. If we translate it into the modern language, he was a man with a career, status, recognition, and influence. And so he says: I consider all this as nothing compared to what I have found in Christ.
WHAT DOES GOD WANT TO SAY THROUGH THIS VERSE?
1. “I CONSIDER EVERYTHING A LOSS” – THIS IS ABOUT COMPARISON.
Paul is not saying that success or achievements are bad. He is saying: when you find what is most important, everything else ceases to be important.
2. “THE SURPASSING WORTH OF KNOWING CHRIST”
There is something that is above anything the world can give: not information about God, but a real relationship with Him.
3. “FOR WHOSE SAKE I HAVE LOST ALL THINGS”
This is not necessarily about giving up everything externally. It is about an internal choice: what now controls my life.
4. “I CONSIDER THEM GARBAGE”
A very powerful expression, meaning that what once determined his value has ceased to have power over him.
5. “THAT I MAY GAIN CHRIST”
The main goal of life is not simply to believe, but to find God as a reality in your life. To learn Him.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Many people today live the same way:
— build a career,
— seek recognition,
— achieve goals,
but inside, a feeling of emptiness may remain, that this is not enough, and it turns into a race for the perishable and temporary.
HOW TO USE IT TODAY
1. Honestly ask yourself a question: what are my value and the meaning of my life built on?
2. Notice what gives you a sense of significance.
3. Understand that this cannot completely fulfill you.
4. Begin to seek God not as an idea, but as a reality. Strive to learn Him.
CONCLUSION
When a person finds Christ, their values change.
FINAL THOUGHT
You can have status, success, and recognition — and still feel emptiness.
But when a person finds Christ, they find what makes them truly fulfilled and happy.
PRAYER
Lord, help me honestly see what I build my value on.
If something has taken Your place, and vanity has taken over my heart — help me get rid of it.
Let me seek You truly, not in words. Become my bread and water. Help me learn You. Amen.
