JOHN 20:30–31
“Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name”.
WHAT IS THIS VERSE ABOUT?
At the end of his Gospel, the Apostle John the Theologian explains why he wrote this book.
He says that Jesus performed many more miracles than are described in the Gospel. John did not try to recount everything. He deliberately selected those events and words of Christ that help us answer the most fundamental question: Who is Jesus?
Therefore, the purpose of the Gospel is not simply to tell the story of Christ's life, but to lead us to faith in Him.
WHAT DOES GOD WANT TO SAY THROUGH THIS VERSE?
God did not leave us the Bible simply to become more educated.
He gave us His Word so that through it we might come to know Christ, believe in Him, and find new life.
John shows that the main purpose of reading the Gospel is not the accumulation of knowledge. The main purpose is a personal meeting with Jesus. That is why he writes: “...that you might believe... and that by believing, you may have life in His name”. Biblical faith is more than just assent to facts. It is trust in Christ that transforms a person's heart, thoughts, and entire life.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Because one can read the Bible as a history book and still not meet its Protagonist. One can know countless verses and still not know Christ personally. John reminds us that every miracle, every conversation, and every event in the Gospel points to Jesus.
Through reading God's Word, God invites people not just to learn about Christ, but to begin living with Him.
HOW TO USE IT TODAY
1. While reading the Gospel, ask yourself: “What does this passage reveal to me about Jesus?”
2. Ask God to make reading the Bible not a habit, but a living meeting with Christ.
3. If you already trust Jesus, strengthen your faith by returning to His words and deeds recorded in the Gospel.
CONCLUSION
The Gospel was not written simply to impart knowledge. It was written to lead people to Christ and give them life through faith in Him.
FINAL THOUGHT
Every time we open the Gospel, God invites us to do more than simply read another page. He invites us to meet His Son. It is this kind of meeting that can change a person's life forever.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, thank You for leaving Your Word. Help me read the Gospel not only with my mind, but also comprehend it with my heart. I want it so much to get to know You personally. Reveal Yourself to me, Jesus, and strengthen my faith. May every reading of the Bible bring me closer to You and help me live and act as You do. I love You. Amen.
