EPHESIANS 1:17–18 “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better, and that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in His holy people”.
WHAT IS THIS VERSE ABOUT? This is one of the Apostle Paul's most profound prayers. Interestingly, he does not pray for believers to become richer, more successful, or for all their problems to disappear. Paul prays for them to come to know God better. Because a person's greatest need is not simply to receive answers to troubling questions, but to know the One who knows all the answers. Paul then asks God to “enlighten the eyes of the heart”. This means that there is truth that cannot be understood with the mind alone. It must be seen with the heart. WHAT DOES GOD WANT TO SAY THROUGH THIS VERSE? God wants our relationship with Him to be living and deep. We can know a lot about God and yet poorly know God Himself. We can read the Bible, listen to sermons, attend church, and still fail to see the beauty of God's heart. That is why Paul asks for the Spirit of wisdom and revelation. Not for new information, but for deep understanding of God. When a person begins to truly know God, their outlook on life, difficulties, the future, and themselves changes. The person themselves changes. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? Because many people seek answers to their own questions first, while God wants to reveal Himself to them. When a person knows God superficially, their faith easily becomes dependent on circumstances. But when the person gets to know God's heart, stability emerges. Then hope is built not on what happens around them, but on the One who controls everything. This is why Paul considers knowledge of God one of the greatest treasures for a believer. HOW TO USE IT TODAY - Ask God not only to solve your problems, but also to reveal His heart to you. - When reading the Bible, ask the question, “What does this verse tell me about God?” - Find time for quiet prayer, in which you will not only speak to the Lord, but also learn to listen to Him. CONCLUSION The main goal of the Christian life is not simply to know more about God or find answers to troubling questions, but to know God Himself. And the closer a person becomes to Him, the more clearly they begin to see their hope and their vocation. FINAL THOUGHT The greatest changes in life begin not when the circumstances change. They begin when a person begins to see God more clearly. For the more we come to know His heart, the less fear remains and the more trust develops. PRAYER Lord, I want to not just know about You. I want to know You. Open the eyes of my heart so that I can see Your love, Your wisdom, and Your will for my life. Help me seek not only answers to my questions, but above all, You Yourself. Teach me to trust You and see my life through Your truth. Amen.
