WISDOM

PSALTER 48:17–18
“Do not be afraid when a man grows rich, when the glory of his house is multiplied;
for when he dies, he will take nothing; his glory will not descend with him”.

WHAT IS THIS VERSE ABOUT?
This passage from the Book of Psalms is about the proper view on wealth and success. It is addressed to those who look at the prosperity of others and feel anxiety, envy, or injustice. The psalmist David says: “Do not be worried by the external glory of others; everything is temporary”.
WHAT DOES GOD WANT TO SAY THROUGH THIS VERSE?
God demonstrates the fragility of material wealth. A person can accumulate:
— money,
— influence,
— recognition,
— fame.
But death reveals the truth: none of these can be taken with us. This verse shatters the illusion that wealth is a value and a guarantee of security.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
We live in a world of comparison. Someone else's success can trigger inner fear or envy:
“Why does he have this and I don't?” “What if I'm left with nothing?”
This psalm is liberating: what now seems to be the pinnacle is temporary. The main question is not how much a person has accumulated, but what (what kind of heart) they will bring to God.
HOW TO USE IT TODAY
• Do not compare your life to someone else's external success.
• Check your heart: what is truly valuable to you?
• Invest your energy not only in the temporary, but also in the eternal.
CONCLUSION
Material success is temporary.
Only what is connected to God and the state of the heart does have eternal value.
FINAL THOUGHT
God does not measure life by the amount accumulated. When everything external disappears, only the soul and its relationship to God remains. Those who understand this now live freely: without fear, without envy, and without the accumulation race.
PRAYER
Lord, protect my heart from envy and fear of other people’s success, power, or wealth.
Teach me to see the temporal and the eternal correctly, teach me to always choose and strive for the eternal and imperishable. Help me build my life not on material things, but on You. I want You alone to be the meaning of my life. Amen.
