HUMILITY

PSALTER 118:71
“My suffering was good for me, for it taught me to pay attention to Your statutes”.

WHAT IS THIS VERSE ABOUT?
This verse is from David's longest psalm.
He says that it is suffering that was good for him because he learned God's “statutes” – the paths and boundaries of life established by God. It is not pain itself that is “good”, but the inner transformation and learning the truth and God that it brings about.
WHAT DOES GOD WANT TO SAY THROUGH THIS VERSE?
1. God uses suffering as a teacher.
The word “suffered” conveys the idea of being humbled through trials. God is not necessarily the source of every trial, but He sovereignly uses them to remove the illusions of self-sufficiency and pride and lead to obedience.
2. God's statutes are not restrictions, but a path to life.
“Statutes” are not random prohibitions, but reliable guidelines. Through suffering, it becomes clear that God's boundaries are protection, not a prison.
3. The good is a change of heart through trials.
David does not say that suffering itself was good; he states that it was good that through suffering, learning occurred – an internal restructuring and a change of heart.
HOW TO USE IT TODAY
1. Reframe your current pain as a learning process. Name your specific trial and ask: what truth of God do I see through it? Which “statute” have I ignored? And what lesson am I supposed to learn from this?
2. Return to the context (118:67–72). Read these verses one by one. Note where I “went astray to suffering”. What is God sharpening and changing in me?
3. Take a practical step of obedience.
One small, measurable step in the area where your conscience convicts: forgive and apologize, repay a debt, stop dishonest practices, keep a promise, repent for untruth and deceit.
4. Replace “why?” with “for what purpose?” While praying, ask for guidance to understand for what and how to improve. The Bible will show you the direction.
CONCLUSION
This verse does not romanticize pain, but shows its reimagined fruit: suffering becomes good when it leads us to knowledge of God's ways and to obedience.
FINAL THOUGHT
Sometimes we think, “If God exists, why does He allow difficulties?” But this verse shows that not everything bad in our lives is truly evil. Pain and trials can open our eyes and teach us what is truly important. Often, it is in difficult moments that we stop running, take a pause, and begin to search for the meaning. God uses this to show that His Word is not a set of prohibitions, but a guideline that helps us live a real life, with deep meaning and hope.
PRAYER
God, I do not always understand why there are difficult moments in my life. Sometimes I feel pain and it seems that everything is going wrong. But I believe that You can turn even my pain into good. Help me see the trials as the lessons You want to show me. Teach me to trust You when things are scary, painful, and confusing. Give me the strength to get through this and not harden my heart, but instead open it to You. May Your word be my light and support. Amen.
