WISDOM

JEREMIAH 17:5
“Thus says the Lord: ‘Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord’”.

WHAT IS THIS VERSE ABOUT?
God says very powerful words through the prophet Jeremiah.
This verse is not just a warning, but a spiritual law: when a person begins to rely only on people, their own strength, money, or connections, their heart gradually drifts away from God.
This is not about not trusting people and asking for help. God speaks of something else – the deepest support of the soul, the one on whom we truly rely, the one to whom we entrust the outcome of our lives, our safety, our future.
When man makes “flesh his strength” – that is, relies on earthly, human, and temporary things – he builds a house on sand. Such a house may stand for certain time, but when a storm begins, it collapses completely.
WHAT DOES GOD WANT TO SAY THROUGH THIS VERSE?
1. God shows that true hope must be found in Him. All earthly powers are limited, people can fail, circumstances can change. Only God is unchanging. When our heart is in Him, external storms will not destroy us.
2. God warns: dependence on people makes us vulnerable. When we seek approval, support, or protection only from people, we lose our inner freedom and begin to live in fear. God wants our confidence to rest on Him, not on the opinions of others or dependence on “influential resources”.
3. God calls us to the trust that gives birth to life. A little later, in verse 7, it is said, “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord”. That is, God does not simply forbid us from relying on people and making them our support – He offers a path to blessing: when the focus of our trust shifts from the human to the Divine.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Because today, most people live exactly like that – relying on their careers, status, finances, and other people. And it seems that everything is under control… until something happens that is beyond our control and influence. And then it becomes clear – it is impossible to live without God.
CONCLUSION
Anyone who places man above God deprives themselves of the source of life and blessings. Hope built on people is always limited, but hope built on God is eternal and unshakable. God does not ask us to distrust people – He asks us not to replace Him with man,
not to substitute the eternal with the temporary.
FINAL THOUGHT
Relying on a human may only give confidence for a time, but it is only relying on God that gives peace and confidence forever.
HOW TO USE IT TODAY
• Ask yourself: who or what do I rely on most?
If the answer is not God, then there is no peace in that area of your life.
• Learn to pray not only during difficult times, but also in ordinary affairs, entrusting God with your decisions, plans, and relationships.
• When you want to complain to someone or seek support, turn to Him first. Let Him be your first support, not just your last hope.
• Do not build your faith on people. People can fail, but God never can.
PRAYER
Lord, forgive me when I relied on people, on connections, but not on You. Forgive me if I prioritized other people's opinions, success, or fear. Help me not to seek support in people more than in You. You are my Path and my Strength. Teach me to trust in You with all my heart, to believe Your words more than circumstances. Let everything I do be built not on fear, but on trust in You. And when I weaken, remind me that You do not change, You are always faithful. Amen.
