TITUS 3:5 “He saved us not by the righteous deeds we had done, but according to His mercy, through the washing of new birth and renewal by the Holy Spirit”.
WHAT IS THIS VERSE ABOUT? The Apostle Paul reminds us that salvation is not the result of our attempts to become “better”, “more worthy” or “more righteous”. Salvation comes only because God is merciful. He regenerates us from within, makes us new creatures, and changes our hearts with His Spirit. WHAT DOES GOD WANT TO SAY THROUGH THIS VERSE? 1. Salvation is not a reward for effort, but a gift of mercy. Man cannot earn heaven. Good deeds, sacrifices, morality, religiosity – none of these save. If salvation could be earned, Christ would not have had to die on the cross. We are saved only because God is kind, merciful, and loves us. 2. God changes a person from the inside. The “washing of new birth” is an image of being born again. God does not simply correct behavior; He gives a new heart. He erases the old past, breaks the power of sin, and forms a new character. 3. The Holy Spirit is the source of renewal. The believer's transformation is not a matter of willpower or human skills. The Holy Spirit dwells inside and transforms thoughts, desires, and values every day. Without the Holy Spirit, Christianity becomes mere morality. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? This verse destroys two dangerous illusions: 1. “I will save myself if I become better”. 2. “I am too bad, God will not accept me”. The Bible answers: you are saved not because you are good, but because God is merciful. This removes pride, because it is not us that have achieved, and it removes fear, because God does not reject repentant sinners. HOW TO USE IT TODAY • Stop trying to earn God's love, just accept it. • If you have fallen, return to God: salvation is given by mercy, not by merit. • Learn to live not by the old nature of your ego, but by listening to the Holy Spirit (the quiet inner voice). • Try to do good not to earn salvation, but out of gratitude for it. CONCLUSION Christianity is not a ladder by which man ascends to God, but a cross that has forever united God with man. Salvation is God's mercy, the new birth, and the life of the Spirit that transforms a sinner into a child of God. FINAL THOUGHT You are loved by God not for your merits, but by His mercy. And if He has begun a good work in you, He will complete it because He loves you. PRAYER Lord, thank You for forgiving me and saving me by Your great mercy. Renew my heart, teach me to live in a way that is filled with the Holy Spirit and Truth. May my entire path be one of gratitude for the salvation You have given for free. Amen.
