PHILIPPIANS 3:13 “…forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead”.
WHAT IS THIS VERSE ABOUT? The Apostle Paul speaks of striving for spiritual perfection. He admits that despite all his accomplishments in life and service, he has not yet fully achieved his goal. Paul desides not to rest on his achievements, but to continue striving forward, without looking back at the past successes or failures. This is a call to constantly moving forward, toward growth in faith and closeness to God. • “Forgetting what is behind” – Paul does not allow the past, whether sins or achievements, to define his present life and spiritual state. • “Straining toward what is ahead” – He actively strives toward the future, toward the goal God has set before him. This forward movement requires effort, self-discipline, and perseverance. WHAT DOES GOD WANT TO SAY THROUGH THIS VERSE? 1. Do not rest on your laurels. No matter what successes you have achieved in the past, you must move forward. In the spiritual life, there is always room for growth and striving for more. Every day is a chance to grow closer to God and move closer to perfection. 2. Do not be dependent on the past. Sometimes we dwell too much on past mistakes, failures, or even achievements. But the example of the Apostle Paul shows that it is important not to get stuck in the past, but to move forward. Do not let the past limit your future. 3. Striving for a higher mission. Every Christian has a goal – to become like Christ. Paul shows that the path to this goal requires effort and determination. He does not offer an easy path, but reminds us that the “narrow way” is always worth enduring and not losing faith. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? It is easy to get stuck in the past, whether it is painful memories of sins or past failures, or pride in what we have already achieved. But the Apostle Paul reminds us that true life with God requires constant growth and striving for the better, regardless of what was before. We cannot afford to dwell solely on the past when God is opening a new future before us. CONCLUSION This verse is a reminder that the journey with God does not end when we think we have achieved everything. We must continue moving forward, despite the successes and failures of the past. We cannot afford to stop or look back, but must strive for the future, for a deeper knowledge of God and the fulfilment of His will in our lives. FINAL THOUGHT True spiritual growth is not a point, but a path. It is important not only to remember how we began, but also to recognize that each new day gives us the opportunity to grow and advance in our understanding of the truth. HOW TO USE IT TODAY • Stop and honestly ask yourself, “Am I stuck in the past?” • Do not let your failures or achievements define your present. • Constantly strive for a close relationship with God, even when the path seems difficult and unclear. • Follow Christ, knowing that only with Him can we move forward and overcome any difficulties. PRAYER Lord, help me not to dwell on the past. Give me the strength to forget what holds me back: my mistakes, regrets, or even past achievements that could hinder my growth in You. Let my life be aligned with You, and let me strive for what You have prepared for me in the eternity. Help me make the right choices every day and move with faith and determination toward Your high calling and reward. Amen.
