WISDOM

1 JOHN 2:17
“The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever”.

WHAT IS THIS VERSE ABOUT?
This verse is about the temporary and the eternal. The Apostle John reminds us that everything that seems so important today will one day lose its power and significance. This is not about the planet or people, but about a value system where desires, status, and temporary pleasures are the primary focus.
WHAT DOES GOD WANT TO SAY THROUGH THIS VERSE?
“The world passes away” means that anything built solely on material things, passions, and egoism, lacks a solid foundation.
“Desires” here refers not only to physical desires, but to the entire inner drive to live for oneself: to obtain, to prove, to possess, to rise above.
God shows that if a person builds their life solely around the temporary, they will one day be left empty-handed. But those who seek and fulfill God's will live in a reality that is not destroyed over time.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
We live in a world where everything changes rapidly: trends, success, popularity, even relationships. It is easy to invest only in what is “shiny now”. This verse poses a profound question: what are you investing your life in – what will fade, or what will last forever?
HOW TO USE IT TODAY
• Ask yourself: what in my life is temporary, and what has eternal value?
• Reassess your priorities: where do I live for impressions and pleasures, and where do I live for a meaning? Filter out the vanity.
• Take a step toward what strengthens your heart in truth, and not just brings pleasure.
CONCLUSION
The temporary always seems urgent. The eternal often seems invisible. But it is the eternal that remains when everything else passes.
FINAL THOUGHT
True stability comes when the heart is connected not to what can be lost,
but to the One Who never fades. A life built on God's will has a depth that endures, because the eternal meaning is found in God.
PRAYER
Lord, forgive me for my vanity.
I am often engaged in what passes quickly and what is temporary, not the eternal. Forgive me for wasting precious time on the earthly and empty. Help me to be alert and distinguish between the temporary and the eternal. Teach me to seek only Your will and build my life on that which will not fade. Protect my heart from emptiness and vanity and fill it with Your truth and meaning. Amen.
