FORGIVENESS

MATTHEW 18:21-22
“Then Peter … asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother who sins against me? Up to seven times?”
Jesus answered, “I tell you, not just seven times, but seventy-seven times””.

WHAT IS THIS VERSE ABOUT?
Peter, Jesus’s disciple, wanted to ask Him if there was a limit to forgiveness. Perhaps, seven times would be enough? But Jesus showed that true forgiveness knows no bounds. God wants us to forgive not by counting, but from the heart.
WHAT DOES GOD WANT TO SAY THROUGH THIS VERSE?
1. From counting to the heart.
As long as we count the number of times, we do not forgive.
God calls us to abandon “the register of debts and counting” and live with a free heart.
2. You have been forgiven—so forgive.
Our debt to God is incomparable with the debts of others to us. Having received mercy, we become its channel.
3. Forgiveness is a strength, not a weakness.
It does not justify evil or abolish boundaries or justice, but it breaks the chain of bitterness and hatred and returns the heart to God's peace.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Without forgiveness, relationships die, the soul hardens, and prayer stumbles over resentment. Forgiveness is the breath of the Kingdom: with it God saved us, with it He heals us and through us He heals others.
HOW TO USE IT TODAY
• Tell God honestly: “I’m hurt, I’m offended”. Do not hide it.
• Make a decision to forgive. Not because the other person deserves it, but because you yourself want to be free.
• Release the situation to God. Imagine lifting this burden from your shoulders and placing it in His hands.
• Pray for the offender. Even briefly: “Bless him, Lord”. This helps you let go.
• Repeat that. If the offense returns, give it to God again – pray. This is the path that teaches the heart freedom.
CONCLUSION
Jesus moves us from the logic of mutual settlements to the logic of mercy. Where the world says, “Enough, you owe me everything”, Christ says, “Forgive the debt, as I forgave yours”. This is the way the heart returns to life.
FINAL THOUGHT
Counting grievances is easy; letting them go is painful and difficult. However, at the foot of the cross, all counters break. Remembering how many times God has lifted you up and forgiven you, you must find the strength and humility to forgive others.
PRAYER
Lord, You have forgiven me so many times.
Help me, too, let go of those who have hurt me.
I do not want to live with a heavy heart; I want to be free.
Bless those who have hurt me, and fill my heart with Your peace.
Amen.
