WHAT IS THIS VERSE ABOUT?
Jesus calls Himself the Good Shepherd. This image was very relatable to the people of that time. A shepherd was responsible for the flock: he protected the sheep, sought out the lost, fed them, and led them along a safe way. But Jesus does not simply speak of care. He speaks of sacrifice.
WHAT DOES GOD WANT TO SAY THROUGH THIS VERSE?
“I am the good shepherd” – Jesus is not just a teacher or a prophet. He is the One who personally guides and protects.
“Lays down his life for the sheep” – this is a reference to the cross. Christ voluntarily gives His life to save people. An ordinary shepherd might risk his life, but Jesus does more – He consciously goes to his death for the sake of salvation.
