PROVERBS 18:9
“One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys”.
WHAT IS THIS VERSE ABOUT?
The wisest king in the world, Solomon, compares two people: one who is lazy or careless in his work, and one who directly destroys and squanders wealth. At first glance, the former “does nothing fundamentally wrong”, he simply “works poorly and ineffectively”. But he says: the consequences of their actions are the same. Laziness and carelessness are not simply bad qualities, but a destructive force that ultimately causes the same losses as wastefulness.
WHAT DOES GOD WANT TO SAY THROUGH THIS VERSE?
• Laziness ruins life. Even if a person does not steal or waste money, but works carelessly and ineffectively, they bring losses to themselves and others.
• Responsibility is more important than talent. You may be smart or capable, but if you do not truly invest, the result will be the same as someone’s who has squandered everything.
• God values faithfulness in small things. Carelessness in work is a reflection of one's inner attitude toward life and toward God.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
We often do not think of laziness or negligence as the same vice and sin as drunkenness or wastefulness. However, Scripture shows that laziness steals years, opportunities, and resources, just like outright wastefulness.
HOW TO USE IT TODAY
• Work as if your work is a service to God, not just a duty and following a job description.
• Strive to be careful and responsible even in small details.
• Do not put off important things – that is also a form of wastefulness.
• Ask yourself, “What am I losing because of my carelessness?” and start changing it.
CONCLUSION
A lazy person and a wasteful person are alike: one destroys everything openly, the other one – slowly, but just as destructively. What matters for God is not only that we avoid evil, but also how diligent we are in what we are entrusted with.
FINAL THOUGHT
Laziness is not a harmless weakness, but a hidden form of wastefulness. Every day wasted is a wasted gift which God gave us. True maturity is working as if you were working for God.
PRAYER
Lord, help me not to be lazy or superficial in the tasks You have entrusted to me. Teach me to work diligently and honestly, with respect for Your gifts. Give me the strength to overcome negligence and do everything I do as if I did it for You. Amen.
