JOHN 12:25
“Whoever loves his soul loses it, and whoever hates his soul in this world will keep it for eternal life”.
WHAT IS THIS VERSE ABOUT?
At first glance, this verse sounds harsh and even frightening. It seems as if Jesus is calling for self-hatred or rejection of life. But in the context of the Gospel of John, Jesus is not speaking of self-destruction, but of two ways to live:
— to live clinging to oneself,
— or to live trusting in God and going beyond selfishness.
WHAT DOES GOD WANT TO SAY THROUGH THIS VERSE?
The word “soul” here does not simply mean life, but a self-centered life, where the most important thing is “I”: my desires, my comfort, my control, my fear of loss.
Jesus reveals a paradox: when a person lives only for themselves, they ultimately lose depth, joy, and meaning. But when a person stops putting themselves at the center of the universe and trusts God, they find true life, deeper and more fulfilling. “Hating the soul” is not about not loving oneself, but about refusing to make one's “I” the primary focus.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
The modern world teaches: “live for yourself”, ”love yourself”, and “get the most out of life”.
But it is often exactly this that leads to emptiness, burning out, and the feeling that something fundamental is missing.
Jesus speaks honestly: a life focused on oneself eventually crumbles. A life devoted to God and filled with the meaning of service and love is preserved.
HOW TO USE IT TODAY
• Notice where you cling too tightly to control and the fear of losing.
• Ask an honest question: what am I living for – just for myself or for a greater meaning?
• Take a step of trust: let go of something important to God, even if it is frightening.
CONCLUSION
The meaning of life is not to hold on to it at any cost. The meaning is to give it in the right way: to God, to truth, to love. And then life does not get lost, but becomes revealed.
FINAL THOUGHT
People fear losing themselves, and it is exactly this fear that often deprives them of true life. When the “I” ceases to be the center, freedom appears in the heart, and life becomes filled with eternal meaning,
which does not end with circumstances.
PRAYER
Lord, I am afraid of losing, and so I often cling to myself. Teach me to trust You more than my fears and worries. Help me not to become self-absorbed, but to live a life that has eternal meaning. Protect my soul from the vain and unnecessary, and fill my life with Your truth and love. Amen.
