HUMILITY

LUKE 17:33
“Whoever tries to keep their soul will lose it, and whoever loses their soul will preserve it”.

WHAT IS THIS VERSE ABOUT?
These words of Jesus are paradoxical, yet profound. He speaks of how true life and true freedom come when a person stops living only for themselves, their own comfort, fears, and attempts to control everything. If people cling to life on their own terms, they lose it. If they humble themselves and surrender themselves to God and His will, they find true life.
WHAT DOES GOD WANT TO SAY THROUGH THIS VERSE?
1. A life built on self-interest leads to loss.
The fear of loss, the desire to control everything, the persistence in one's own “doing things my way” – all of this destroys one’s soul. A person can retain comfort, reputation, and security, but lose their soul.
2. True life comes through humility before God.
“To preserve one's soul” means to renounce egocentrism and pride, to stop living only for oneself, to choose God's will, even if it is difficult. Then comes what a person seeks all their life: peace, freedom, meaning/purpose, and true joy.
3. The path of Christ is the path of giving, not retaining.
Jesus sets an example: He gave Himself – and through this came life for the world. Similarly, a person receives life through giving: service to others, sacrifice, humility.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
The world today is shouting, “Live for yourself”, “Love yourself”, “Get what you want”. But all this leads to emptiness. Jesus reveals a spiritual law: whoever retains, loses; whoever gives, finds. This principle changes everything: relationships, decisions, faith, lifestyle.
HOW TO USE IT TODAY
• Let go of what you are tryng to control. God can lead better than we can retain.
• Learn to take steps of faith, even if they require courage.
• Live beyond your own interests: serve, help, show love, sacrifice time and attention for others.
• Check your heart: where do I live for myself, and where do I live for God's will?
• Say to God every day: “Let Your will be done, not mine”.
CONCLUSION
Jesus reveals the secret of spiritual life: only by giving oneself to God does a person find their true self.
What seems like a loss is actually the path to true life.
FINAL THOUGHT
By trying to preserve everything that belongs to oneself, one loses what is most important. By dedicating oneself to God, one gains everything truly worth having.
PRAYER
Lord, help me not to cling to my life, my ambitions, my understanding. Teach me to trust You, to give myself to You, and to find true freedom and life in this. Grant me humility and fidelity to live as Your Word teaches and to go along the path that leads to eternal life. Amen.
