LUKE 23:28–31
“Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me; weep for yourselves and for your children...
For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”
WHAT IS THIS VERSE ABOUT?
Jesus is going to be crucified at the most difficult moment of His suffering. The women are weeping for Him, seeing His pain. But He suddenly turns their attention and says, “Do not weep for Me; weep for yourselves”. He uses an image:
“a green tree” — a living one, full of strength, without guilt (this is Himself);
“a dry tree” — devoid of life, an image of a person separated from God.
And these words are not just an image, but a warning.
WHAT DOES GOD WANT TO SAY THROUGH THIS VERSE?
1. This is a warning of consequences. If people are capable of doing this to the Innocent, to the Truth Itself, it means the world is in a state of profound spiritual distortion. And this cannot remain without consequences.
2. This is not only about Christ's suffering, but about the future of humanity. Jesus is not speaking about Himself — He is speaking about what awaits those who remain “dry” — without God inside. This concerns both the historical events (the destruction of Jerusalem) and the spiritual reality — the judgment and the consequences of living without truth.
3. The main problem is blindness of the heart. People are weeping, but they do not understand Who is before them. They see suffering, but they do not see the truth. And this is the deepest tragedy.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
This verse shows that one can be “near” to God, experience grief, sympathize, even cry —
and yet remain internally distant from understanding the truth. Tears alone do not change one’s heart. Only a meeting with the truth changes it.
HOW TO USE IT TODAY
• Ask yourself an honest question: do I understand who Christ is for me?
• Check whether there is life inside or just an external form.
• Do not dwell on emotions, but seek the truth deeper.
• Consciously turn to God, and do not just formally believe in His existence.
CONCLUSION
Jesus does not accept pity, because what people need is not pity, but awakening.
Not looking at Christ from the outside, but seeing their state before Him.
FINAL THOUGHT
The most terrible thing is not when a person is suffering, but when they do not understand what is happening to their soul.
PRAYER
Lord, help me not to remain blind to the truth. Let me see deeper, understand my state,
and not pass You by. Revive my heart, help me learn the truth, and lead me to true life with You. Amen.
